Howard Miller began building clocks back in 1921, and even though not as long as Seth Thomas, who started in 1814, both men insisted on high craftsmanship and excellence in their product. It was his quest for perfection in every clock, plus unsurpassed quality, that soon made his clocks very popular.
His father, Herman Miller, trained him in the art of clock making in the Black Forest region in Germany. In his early years, Howard specialized in the production of mantle clocks and chiming wall clocks. Later on, he began to produce some rather avant garde, as well as trend setting styles of clocks that today are in collector’s galleries around the world.
These charming and ornate Howard Miller antique mantle clocks, especially the one depicted here, features an antique gray finish over a sculpted wrought iron base frame with a very decorative cast crown. It is placed on a Windsor cherry base that is finished with decorative molding that runs completely around the base. The serpentine clock hands are antique finished over an aged dial with black Roman numerals. A convex glass crystal covers the face and a quartz battery operated movement plays the Westminster chimes exactly on the hour. For night time quiet, there is an automatic chime shutoff option.
